Brown algae

Get some lighting in the right spectrum, or just stronger lighting. most t8s, t10s or t12s are just going to grow brown algae, t5s, compact fluorescents and leds should grow green.

I had a brown algae bloom right after my tank was cycled and it lasted for 1-2 months. I just kept the lights on a little longer everyday and changed the water more frequently; once a week was how often. Now finally the green algae overtook the brown. It's a little more slightly than brown.

What kind? If they are not designed for plants I wouldn't ever expect it to turn green. If you just added one fluorescent light at 20,000k, you might have more then your fish can eat.

2500-3000k will work. Get a cfl and utility clamp light from Walmart or I can send you the green algae my algae scrubber harvests....
