So I was at an LFS today and they had a 6 inch african aro for sale. He "followed" me around the room from his tank and bobbed up and down whenever I approached, going so far as to stick his head above water. The owner said that he only did that for certain people. He acted like he wanted to jump into my lap like a funny looking dog. Unfortunately, my 55 and 30 gallon tanks aren't big enough for one:cry: I want to know if this behavior is normal.

My jardini used to greet people as they walked past shaking his head side to side at front of the tank , my jag also rushes to the front when i walk past but only because he's a greedy pig looking for food
I'd say its pretty normal for most pred fish to follow movement past there tanks instinct I guess

Both my male and female true red devils do this but if I get too close the male freaks out and attacks the glass

I couldn't help but call him adorable. But I don't have the time to invest in feeding the little guy nor the tank space *sigh* otherwise I would have broken out a can of earth worms and plopped him into the 250 gallon that I dream of but don't have.....

I had a Jardini and a GIANT black cat. He ignored the cat. When my parents brought their black dog over, that was the same size, he freaked and attacked the glass. He would stay at whichever end of the tank the dog was at. He would bang the glass and shiver / quiver. My Fahaka puffer is all excited when I am around and hides whenever someone else is in the room. Fish recognize people.

I love personality fish. That's the one thing that I don't like about specialist shops, there's always so many intelligent fish with so many different personalities and I want them all!

buying a large tank is not possible?

someone donated a midevil to my store about 6 months ago and i fell in love with him. aside from the huge fight it caused it with my gf, im so happy i brought him home.

No, I'm a college student with a limited budget. Right now it's mainly gouramis, angels, fancy bettas, blood parrots, and small plecos that I keep. Oh, and ghost knives, my favorite fish. It is my dream one day to have an african aro and today just made me long for it all the more. Of course, I will still have to have my knives, angels, and bettas. But not all in the same tank!

Patience is a virtue. A potentially-3' fish is a big commitment, and the tank to adequately house one not something that can be easily shifted. Be happy with the fish you can keep, don't let it distract you from your studies and you'll be able to set up that big tank in no time! ;)

Very good advice :D Thanks.

Yeah, I can dream, but for now my angels and fancy bettas keep me happy.
