My friend is shutting down his tank and is giving away his three florida gars, they are all around 15 inches or so. I have a 210 gallon cichlid tank and was thinking of trying to rehome one. Do gars do ok on their own or do they have to be in groups/schools?

Main reason is aggression from the cichlid. Gars are very easily picked on by more aggressive fish. I've seen a couple gars missing eyes or fins from improper tank mate choices. There is also the possibility of broken backs and the possible death that accompanies them.

I've kept gar with. Wolf fish,Arowanas, oscars. Pacu, jags, Texas cichlids, jack Dempseys, bowfin, polypterus, peacock bass, the list goes on. Never had a problem with any tank mate unless they fit into gars mouth.

Ok, that makes sense about the aggression. My cichlid tank is pretty mellow, but I will have to think about this then.
Thanks guys.
