Keeping peacocks in soft water?

Why is it that whenever I talk to "cichlid experts" they say peacocks can only survive in hard water 7.6-8.4 and anything less than 7.6 will cause faded coloring, stress, disease, etc???

because in nature peacocks rarely encounter ph lower than 7.5 but most peacocks you would buy in a lfs have been raised and breed in all sorts of ph so it doesn't really matter unless were dealing with wild caught or a f number fish.

I keep mine at 6.7ph and they thrive and have great colors

Most fish can adapt to water condition outside their optimal range. Just because you have a pH of 6.7 does not mean that you have soft water. It means that your water is acidic. Softness and hardness is determined by your GH. Have you ever measured your GH and KH?

I did measure both about 15 months ago but I couldn't even tell you what the ranges were. I don't test anything unless I have problems and I haven't had any problems in about 18 months or so
