I have 5 jacobfreibergi cichlids, 2-3" long. All have sunken bellies this morning until I fed them, but been having orange colored stringy poop for the last couple weeks. I feed them twice a day, what they can eat in a min or so. I use NLS for cichlids, my water perimeter are 0 for ammonia and nitrites, 40-80ppm for nitrates. I vac up poop once or twice a day with my eheim quick vac, 20% water change 1-3 a week depending how high nitrates are. I do intend to pick up some pothos soon to help keep nitrates down.

White color stringy poop, and/or sunken belly is most often an internal parasite. Orange poo could be from the nls dyeing the white to orange.

If it keeps up for more then a day, dose with seachem paraguard, or if they get worse, use mardell clout.

Remove any carbon or purigen before adding meds.

most LFS's carry them but might not have the same brands mentioned.

r u saying their bellies are sunken in by morning after looking like this?
if yes then take another pic showing this

From the pic the fish seems to be shaped fine, before I would add meds
I'd add epsom salts at a tblspn to 10 gal and feed a little more :)

I haven't fed them today, nor medicated. I can't find any of the medications you guys suggested locally...

It may be possible I misunderstood the "sunken belly", these guys seems very hungry just poop long stringy poo and not sure if I should be concerned.

I do see what you're looking at in this picture.
IMO, I would not be concerned at this point.
He looks like a nice young Swallowtail :)

either way the laxitive of epsom salts is a good preventive measure

Except for wild fish I have not seen many african's have parasites.

but most of the time I buy from a breeder not a LFS.

This is very good advice, and I agree completely. I have no idea what your local stores stock however you should keep some medicines on hand in case of an outbreak. Especially since your local store does not seem to stock very much. Most all of the larger online stores will carry the medicines I mentioned earlier.

You can read about them and what their chemicals are. The two I mentioned are brand names but there are many other brands with the same general chemicals.

Internal parasites are generally pretty rare but it does happen. In my 25 years of fish keeping I have encountered them several times. If it happens, trust me you will know it. The white stringy poo Will look like their insides are coming out!
