I originally posted here, but was able to finally get access to my old account so will start anew to keep things organized. Weather was decent finally this weekend so got some lumber and started the build-up. This was my first woodworking project ever, and I needed to get a few tools so frequent trips to HD happened. Below is a photographic timeline of sorts of the build phase and where I am currently. Structurally it's sound as heck. Definitely used more screws than I had planned on. Got carried away I think. Took twice as long to build with all the predrilling to do as a result.

Good job so far it looks like. The only suggestion is the board on the.bottom to hold filters/supplies doesn't go all the way to sides and I would just be concerned about something falling down the hole. Keep us updated.

Yes, there are 3 of those holes. I'm still debating on how I want to personally deal with it. Im conflicted in throwing up leftover ply and just making a pretty wall, or cutting some styrofoam to fit, paint, and just prevent things falling in. Or making baskets to fit in them and utilize the space.

I think at this point it's going to depend on what I am 'feeling like' as my back felt like it went through a torture rack while putting this together, lol.

well being my first woodworking project, few uneven pieces cosmetically. I'll have to get over it though as I can't shell out more cash for more birch :D

I started staining the doors today with a goal of getting the stand stained by the end of the day as well. If I'm lucky I'll be able to have the doors installed in a few days and then move it inside the house finally.

Got it moved inside: 1011191_680900215295600_1168751853_n.jpg

When I load the tank up and fill it with water, should that take away my concern of it tipping? it's 36" tall. My youngest pulling on the stand itself cant budge it but my oldest if she straight out yanks on it is able to start it to topple over.

Am I correct in assuming the half ton+ that's about to be placed on top of it will prevent that from remaining an issue?

thx again

Shouldn't be an issue but they are your kids all the same so your its your judgement. Weight of the stand + approx 1250 pounds. If they are able to get to the top, maybe. Aquariums are top heavy being that all the water is above the stand.
