I was just wondering if I can remove the baskets and just fill it full or matrix, stars, ring, ect. Would I need a sponge or could I get away with no sponge and raise the inlet just below the water surface.

I current am using an ac110 for my mechanical filtration and I figured I could designated the Rena for 100% bio filtration

What does everyone think

The baskets make sure the water flows through the entire filter. So you need those. But I have filled each basket with bio media only and it worked out nicely.

You will need the sponges. It keeps your media clean and makes cleaning easier. At least use the poreous sponge. I used Eheim bio balls for my Rena XP
