I would say yes and maybe some driftwood unless you are keeping africans, then some rocks for caves.

Id change the background, play around with moving the plants(move the big one to one side or the other. Being right in the middle makes it look odd) and get the same bulbs for both lights and I think you'd be off to a good start. Ofcourse its all subjective but thats what id do

What cichlids? I keep a high tech planted tank with central and south american cichlids, and the fish aren't my problem (its the damn algae, AGH)

However, you might need to change a lot if you did real plants. What fish do you have though and what size tank is this?

You can also think about a 3d background. They look fantastic with driftwood and plants.
