I have a question. If Asian arowanas are so endangered why don't they just have breeders release fry back in to the wild like what they do with surgeon? It would also be beneficial by expanding the gene pool. The solutionon seems so simple, so why won't they do it?

Well in asian they eat the arowanas and its pretty profitable and cheap when dead. Also it taste really good or something like that. Its not like the US where laws are enforced so even if they were released fisherman who need to feed families will still fish them for profit and food

Simple answer; money. There has yet to be a gov't department willing to take on the cost and task of relocating asian aro fry to the wild. Breeding farms can be a thousand miles from the aro's range. Aside from multi-day trips to the aro's range and keeping the release alive, there's also the threat of poachers waiting for the release to occur, piracy in the waterways requiring armed escorts, and enforcement of capture laws after any successful releases.
Other factors affecting repopulation of the species are loss of range area from pollution, human population expansion, over-fishing, damming, agricultural drainage and runoff of ag pollutants, and no oversight agency providing accurate population accessments to gauge recovery efforts.
Keep in mind that the efforts would have to be made with genetically unaltered wild variants. Breeding farms focus on selective breeding practices to promote desireable attributes in colors and patterns. These practices severely limit pure wild-strains available for range repopulation.

You must be seriously deluded to say that. Yes, for the natives that live near the river they might eat asian arowanas back in the days. Same with Arapaima. And with the almost extinct status do you seriously think there is anymore wild ones in the river for anyone to eat? If there's any caught they would be sold off immediately as the value can earn them x100 more than they eating the fish.

And no, the thousands and thousands of asian arowanas coming out from various farms do not get eaten either. Do you go to aquarium to buy a over 100bucks fish with little to no meat to eat? You may see some videos on youtube of people eating asian arowanas but these are usually already dead aquarium pet or those they caught from individual fishing. If eating, there is any, it is not the reason, not even the tip of the iceberg to why it's almost extinct.

On the side note it always amazes me to how some people from the western side of the world still habour the idea of how every non-western people are people are low class and seemingly vultures who devour every single thing crosses their path. Maybe it's time for you to grow up and take sometime off and travel outside to see how the world is now.

I apologize in advance if this gonna sound offensive. But let me put it in another perspective the truth of this issue.

Simply said, this is only America's problem.

You want the fish and you're in America. Why should the people in Asia do something about it? For the rest of the world outside America, asian arowanas are abundant. They are farmed and in almost every fish store you could get one. So why should they care and do something for YOU in America?

Rather, if you want the fish so badly, why don't you do something about it yourself. Maybe bring a few million dollars to Asia and start some conservation project?

It's easy to say so much or do so much online but when coming to real action no one wants to do it or unable to.

In the end if you really want an asian arowana so badly maybe you should just rent a house in Asia and keep one.

I hold no confident in the ban being lifted in the US. I've came across online forum topics about this issue dating 10 years ago and still it is the same today.

Thank you so much. I'm asian and i live in America. we're not ****ing savages that eat everything and anything that comes our way. truthfully this is the first time i've heard of people eating asian arowanas. i know in the amazon river basin silver arowanas are game fish and are eaten... but yeah, why eat something you can sell for 100x the profit
