Say you have a 20 gallon aquarium. Half of the aquarium is rock work. Meaning less water is in the setup due to the weight of the rocks.

So is this 20 gallon setup now just ten gallons?

I would say yes and no. technically yes it would only be about 10 or 12 gallons of water, but you still have the lager foot print of the 20 gallon.

yes you do have to take into consideration that there is less space... not a stupid question.. but one that probably is misunderstood many times over so you will have to take this into consideration when adding a safe number of fish. how exactly have you changed the space on your 20 gal tank is a judgement call.
