Two part question...

1) What is the ideal mechanical filtration type of filter (i.e. canister, hob, etc)?

2) What is the best available specific filter (i.e. ac110, FX6, etc)?

1. Whatever works for you. Some people like canisters, some like hob, some like sumps, some like other types.
2. AquaClear 110 is the best made filter of all time. They have stood the test of time and been around for about 40 years.

Depends on the tank. Mechanical filtration improves with a higher flow rate. You also want to have it easy to clean. The more often you can clean it the better off your water parameters will be. For a standard tank it would be hard to beat an AC110 cleaned every 2-3 weeks.

I like the aquaclear series, I am running two aqua clear 70's on my 120 and it sounds like a peaceful water fall and the media does a great job of gathering particles, I also have a cascade 1000 canister filter and it is rated for 100 gallons and it is silent and completely customizable for media.

Depending on your setup, generally an ac500 does a great job. In the past I used it in combination with a can and just used the ac500 as mechanical(x2 sponge).

The saltwater section has a modified powerhead filter. Which is the best mechanical filtration I have seen. I had to modify mine because I have a smaller tank.

lots of filters can be set up to be great mechanical filters..if you give us hypothetical tank size and stock it would be easier to make a recommendation
