I am redoing the filtration on my 270 gallon 72 x 36 x 24.

I currently run a 120 gallon sump with a Laguna 4200 and want to switch to a closed loop system with an Ultima II filter.

I've been looking at the numbers and am deciding between the Ultima II 2000 and Ultima II 4000.

Ultima II 2000 $623
Sequence 750 $344
~2500 GPH @5'

Ultima II 4000 $963
Reeflo Barracuda/Hammerhead hybrid $410
~3500 GPH @5'

What do you guys think? I also run a FX5 with turbotwist 12x on the tank.

I think either Ultima would be overkill for your tank IMO but its all up to you. Whats wrong with your current setup if you don't mind me asking. Large sump, Laguna and FX5 seem more than enough on a 270.

My sump is a pain to clean because of the height (4x2x2) and the backwashing feature of the Ultimas sounds very appealing. I want to remove the sump/laguna pump, but keep the fx5/UV running. My tanks are very heavily stocked, so I need at least 10x turnover. Right now im leaning towards the Ultima 4000 in case I upgrade again soon.

I think the Ultima 2000 & 4000 might need your entire tank volume for it to backflush properly.

Also where are you going to put it? The 1000 would fit under a standard stand, anything bigger won't unless you have a really tall stand.

If you have room a 2000 might work, but back flushing it would be probably a 50%+ water change (which is fine). I don't think a 4000 would work.

A 1000 and an fx5 though should be plenty of filtration on a 270.

Why are you so over stocked? Maybe considering giving a fish or two to a friend.
