Newly planted light period?

So my 40 breeder is freshly planted, and I was wondering if there was any benefit to a longer light period when it's first getting started?
I have had some algae issues, but that was with almost no plants, now that it's been planted, the algae seems to be slowing down quite a bit...
I haven't gone out and gotten a timer yet, so I turn it on before I leave for work and turn it off sometime after I get home, so we're talking 10-12 hours. And no ambient light when off (I work nights to my windows are blacked out)
Will the extra light help anything or should I just get a timer and cut it to 8 or 9 hours?

Finnex LED fixtures use 7000k + blue moon lighting for freshwater, and 10,000k + actinic in lighting for saltwater.
I'll have to look it up when I get home, i believe it's the DS model... maybe I can link it on my phone...

You are correct, it is 7k, not sure where I was getting 6.7k from...

12 hours vs 8 is a 33% difference! Not only will your fixture last 33% longer, it will also decrease power consumption/heat displacement and lower the potential for an algae take over.

Since your going to buy a timer might as well get a ramp timer that increases over a 30min duration mocking a sunrise/set! http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FDV1AFA

I saw those, but thought they only worked with the Current brand lights...

The current single ramp timer will work with other brands as long as they have the same type of connection. However, I have the same timer in F1's link and unfortunately it does not work with my Finnex Planted+ fixture. I use it for my Current Sat+ fixture and it is a great timer with a 15 minute gentle ramp up/down period for lights on one of the fixed settings.

The the Finnex Ray II was released before the Finnex planted+. So if the connections are the same, my guess is the current single ramp timer wouldn't work on the Ray II either. Just in case I'd check the specs for each light. I'd also imagine there's some type of adapter that MAY work. Finnex is supposed to have a ramp timer released soon, but I dont know the date. Hope this helps!

I'd have to look, but I'm pretty sure my light has no connector other than the power cord...

Got a timer and took the light cycle down to 9 hours. MUCH less algae in a week!
