Business is business. Unless there are (enforced) laws otherwise people do what is profitable.

There are similar numbers for the rest of our food too. Lots of fresh veggies end up rotting in someone's fridge while they eat frozen pizzas.

One summer, back when I was in high school (late 1980's), I spent a month down in Texas with cousins who were shrimp fishermans. I went with them for a week to experience shrimp trawling. It really, really bothered me (still does) to bare witness to how much sea life was wasted in those trawling nets.
