I'm a noob, so please excuse the dumb question. Motoros and Hystrix being illegal in California is one of the only disadvantages of living here! I have a 180 gallon sand bottom aquarium, and I'm curious.
I am pretty sure those are not really freshwater. They will survive for awhile and then croak. They are called freshwater by the people that sell them to uneducated buyers.Atlantic Freshwater stingrays maybe. Anyways 180 is most likely to small.

That sucks, but good to know. Thanks for the response!Unfortunately, even if a new species is identified from S. Amer., it would still be illegal in CA since the state banned the entire Family; Potamotrygonidae.
How often would they check on the permit? I've had permits in the past for stuff like hedgehogs, ferrets, and certain reptiles, but I had to fill out a quarterly report of the places I visited with the animals and they would call to check on it. Not sure I would be able to take a ray anywhere that often. You need to check with your state fish and game to see if you can acquire rays for educational purposes or special use through a permit and go that route
