Hello Guys,

For my shop i bought a polypterus ansorgii. This guy is 53 cm big. I never really found anny good info on the web for them getting this big most websites claim they get around 28 cm. The problem is that i can almost never get them under a size of 40-50 cm so its not a rare occasion for them getting this big. Now i am wondering if the info on the web of the ansorgii is false or that the ansorgii's on the market are not ansorgii's but congicus.

I hope somone here can id mine.

That is an ansorgii. Old literature will say that they only max out 11" but started on 2004. The max size was revised as ansorgii can grow to as big as other lower jaw bichirs and is known to be the second largest bichirs just after the congicus. Ansorgii grows very slow compare to other lower jaw. When they were first discover the biologist who study them thought that they only max 11" as it did not grow as fast as the other lower jaw. He probably thought that it wont grow anymore. Also back then researcher keep them in smaller tanks.
