Hi, I have been keeping Bichirs now ever since I got into Oddballs. I would say along with Datnoides they are probably my favourite fish now. Anyway, having only really starting to pay any attention to the differing species, sub species and WC an CB quite recently I am really wanting to learn a lot more about this side of it as mt collection grows.

Within the next year I will be upgrading my 200 Gallon my current fish are in, to a roughly 1500 Gallon tank. At this point I will hopefully be looking to add a few more imported Polypterus species as at the moment I seem quite limited as to what's on sale here in the UK. Also a few more Dats with the possibility of a PB or 2. I wont be adding any proper monster cats or Arros so I should have room for quite a few.

Anyway, my post is about my current Bichirs, I was hoping that some the experts on here could help me identify exactly what I have in terms of CB/WC along with the full scientific names, I have seen there are quite a lot of variants within each species and I wouldn't mind help identify my current stock. I have been doing a lot of reading on here recently but still unable to fully determine myself. The video below has them in, but I can

My list of Bichirs are;

2x Ornates - could anyone tell me male or female too? one is just on 20", the other around 14"
1x Endi - about 12"
1x Palmas - about 10"
1x Delhezi - about 12-13"

I hope this underwater video helps as it has quite a lot of close ups, if not I can add individual photos. Thanks for a\ny help in advance, Vinny

The Ornate in 1:17 (from the glimpse I got) is a female. If you got your polys when there were very small (1-3"), they are probably CB. Individual photos would help. Video is cool, but hard. I didn't see the palmas, but it might very well be a senegal.

This might help you sex your polys.

This one is my Delhezi, I know these are often mistaken for somethig else. Believe it or not, this is the same fish in all photos, the colour difference on the different coloured sand is brilliant.

This is the larger Ornate, think it's the female one, I had this one from when it was about 10". That was around 4.5 years ago. In the last year it has really grown, went from about 14 to around the 20 it is today
