I have two outdoor fish ponds each with a powerful pump sucking through six sponge filters into a box/chamber with bio balls and out through fountains. Water changes are very difficult and I'd like to ad some carbon to remove toxins. Does the carbon need to be in the water stream or could it be, for example, in a mesh bag laying on the bottom?

How large is this pond? carbon really isnt necessary and doesnt really do much. seachem purigen will probably do more than for you than carbon as it will just make your water quality better resulting in reduced odor, cloudless, and overall better quality removing tons more than carbon. And it can be recharged so you wont be wasting money!
