I'm so excited! After months of deliberations, I have decided on my population for my new 300gallon! My tank will have: 2 red-eared sliders, 1 largemouth bass, 4 pumpkinseed sunfish, 1 channel cat, and 2 central stonerollers. Filtration will b 75gal bio sump and 2 fx5s(one on either side) filled with sponges and ceramic rings. I'm SO excited! Now I just need to start the ridiculous process of getting transport permits...

Sounds like a plan! Just a note though, a channel will probably outgrow that tank but it would take a few years, not to get into that controversial topic. Post some pics of the setup once you have it up, I'm and I'm sure others are anxious to see it!

Never kept channels b4. But the tank is 30in wide. So technically, unless its special, shouldn't outgrow the tank. But I'm only going by numbers people have posted, so i might b wrong. Largest catfish I've had is my 2ft pleco :)

Hm... a thought occurred and I'm confused... Guy tells me tank is 300gal, 9ftL 30inW 30inT... Just did tank gallon calculator... It tells me its 420gal... Did i just die, go to heaven and am about to pickup a 420gal for $500 or am i being dumb?

Nice score!

In regards to channel cat, if its Ictalurus punctatus then it should top out at 24", so should be fine in that tank. However, it is a catfish so watch out for those sunfish.

Of course, this is all just talk, so we'll need pics to confirm this is all legit ;)

Channel will get to 12" very VERY fast. They go moderately fast to 18". Slow down a bit to 24". And if they get any bigger it will take several years but they have the potential (keyword potential) to get 36" in a matter of years. tbtb has kept them and told me that so I'm just going off his knowledge. There research I did on them suggests same as you, about 24" but who knows right! If you just got a 420 for $500 then tell me where you're getting this from :)! I paid over $1000 for my entire 75 setup, theat means everything minus the fish but still I feel like I got scammed. Keep us updated!

Yikes! I got my 75 brand new from Petsmart which included cover and light for under $200 about 2 years ago. Also grabbed a brand new stand there for like another $100. You got hosed

Last time I ever get a tank under 180 gallons from an LFS. Yeah I paid $250 for the tank, $100 for the hood, $150 or $200 for the stand, $170 for the filter, and another $250-300 for other stuff. That doesn't add up to $1000 exactly but I'm estimating. I'll just get future tanks that are relatively small from craigslist or something. I need to get a setup appraised on here before I buy my next tank :)
