Hello agian. I had my baby a.gar in a 125gal tank but it was too massive for him. So I moved him to my 40 gal tank instead. When do you guys think I should move him back to the 125gal at what size? First pics are of him, and pic of my 125gal. Last pics are of him with my vampire tetra living temp. They are both 3.5 inches

It depends on how large your 40 gallon is, I would try 6 inches. I had an alligator in a 180 gallon which was 6 inches long, yours should be fine. What are you planning on doing with your gar when it out grows the 125?

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping he would be happy in a 300 gal tank, I here they get 3' others say 6' am not sure which source is correct. He should he the 6inch mark in 3mos?

What are the dimensions of your 300? No he'll reach six inches within 3 weeks if he is very well fed, my gars grew at a inch a week when they were 12 inches and below.

It's not necessarily the amount of gallons which is important its the footprint. Gars are large fish which need plenty of space. Alligator gars need thousands of gallons to be completely satisfied in the long term. You have a gar which is capable of reaching 3-4 feet long. I would say a footprint of 6 foot sounds like a minimum. Maybe some input from other gar guys could also be helpful.

wait until he get around 8-9'' then move him to bigger tank, it is safer that way. but I think t is best to move him to a 20 gallon then move him to the 40 when he grow to 5-6'' then move hm to bigger tank when he is around 8-9'', it is to keep him from breaking his back due to too large of a tank when young.

Thats interesting, how would someone even aquire a tank like that, I have never seen one
you're in the U.S, a plastic stock tank can be a cheap big tank/pond, or you can just build one really easy.
