Do large salt water aquariums need a sump like a 500 gallon. could I just use a canister filter for it.

a canister filter would never handle a 500gal SW tank. flow rate is halved, so if a canister says it will handle a 300gal (it won't), put that down to 150gal.
same with koralia and such power heads. water flow is very important in a SW tank and you just won't have enough from a canister.

No offense but perhaps you should rethink the 500 gallon tank idea or at least take time to plan out the following
- Placement
- Maintenance
- Filtration
- Equipment
- Feeding
- Stocking
- Monitoring and automation

I am not sure what size tanks you have already but it seems as though your experience may be more with smaller sized tanks...
