But no, 3" is still pretty small for most larger cichlids... probably have a better idea around the 5-6" mark.

It could be a hoga, white substrate can really wash out color. If you play close attention to the dorsol fin, if it is a female you will see a blackish blotch come and go. If it is male there will be none.
