I have it above the water level to find out that it's not self priming and needs a certain kind of check valve or foot valve to get started. Is there another way to get it running? And is that the specific check valve the only one that I can use?

It needs to be plumed BELOW the water level for it to work right. Most external pumps are like this.

I'm currently running several Darts and have never heard anything of using a check or foot valve. :(

Just drain the sump, drill a hole below where the water level will be, plum the pump and you're good to go......... :grinno:

DB is correct. I imagine the instructions that came with the pump told you this as well.

It actually can be run with a check valve. I read the instructions lol. I put the check valve on and the primed it by pouring water in on the other side of the pump until the pump was full. Worked like a charm. I would have set it up inline but after I rebuilt the stand there was no room.
