wanted to share some pics of the seabass ( lateolabrax japonicus ) I saw yesterday . was taking a night walk by a river in my neighborhood and saw a fisherman pull that beast from the river beneath some underwater structures . it was caught in place about 50km upstream in freshwater . Normally only small ones ascend rivers , large one like this in freshwater is very rare .DSC_1400.jpgDSC_1402.jpgDSC_1405.jpgDSC_1407.jpgDSC_1396.jpg

Nice fish. Too bad in the net but I guess it'll do for a meal.

They are fine eating fishes , if caught in seawater they do fine sashimi , caught in freshwater to eat it raw not safe though .

The fish was caught on hook and line , the net just a holding pen to keep it alive and fresh while the guy is fishing for more .

other small ones caught using small spoons in the qiantang river . I think they would make a nice addition to any freshwater predatory tank , brackish water tank or fish only marine tank , only problem is I dont know if they can live in a tropical tank all year round.was wrong in my first post , this is not lateolabrax japonicus but lateolabrax maculatus . They can live in fresh , brackish and seawater just fine .DSC_1439.jpg

Interesting looking fish.I wouldn't be surprised if Wes has brought a few in in the past.

what is wes ? I want to introduce this fish to more aquarist around the globe to show other interesting fish in China , most predatory aquarist only focus on the mandarin fish species , the yellowcheek carp or leptobotia elongata as rare predatory fish in China . this fish rival them both in beauty and monster growing potential but does not receive any attention .
