I'll jump in on this, I keep some wild type, mouthbrooding bettas from Borneo.
They have somewhat the appearance of mini snakeheads (at least to me).

very nice duanes, is this the actual snakehead betta ive seen on ebay?

Yeah they do resemble mini snakeheads.I would like to get some of the microctenopoma species some day.

I don't know them as mini snakeheads, although betta's are distant cousins to snakeheads (and look fairly similar).
There are about a dozen (maybe more) species of wild type bettas, other than Betta splendens. many are mouthbrooders, and can be kept together in a tank.
My 3 B edithae live together in a 50 gal with young cichlids, and enjoy a fairly strong current.

The albimarginatta also share a tank, without fighting.
