I would use 10 or 20. Color doesn't matter.

I use the 2" thick foam, 20PPI and 30PPI. I may also have a 10PPI in one of them but I don't remember. Color doesn't matter.

Guys should have mentioned that this will go under the matrix so i dont want it to clog up something that would be similar to a coarse pad

Deeda would the 10ppi be the equivalent of a fine pad and the 20-30 be equivalent to the coarse pads ?

This is from the FAQ on http://www.swisstropicals.com/faq/

Q: how do you equip various canister filters with Poret® filter foam?

A: I recommend layers of 2-in foam because that size is easy to rinse and cut to fit with large scissors or a knife. Depending on the size of the canister, start with 1-2 sheets in 10 PPI (coarse), followed by layers of 20 PPI, and finish with 30 PPI foam. You can even remove all the media baskets to put more foam into the canister to increase the filter efficiency. I do not recommend fine filter pads, filter floss, or 45 PPI foam, since these materials compact quickly and clog the filter long before there is any need to clean the bulk of the filter material. That not only shortens the maintenance intervals (more work), the cleaning also disrupts the biofilm that actually makes your filter work. All such Poret® equipped filters will be both biological as well as mechanical.

No, 10PPI is coarser so more solids will pass through the foam. It will still trap larger debris and plant material.

I just checked my filter sheet and I'm using one 2" thick 10PPI Poret as the first foam above 5L of EhfiMech (tubes), then one or two 2" thick 20PPI Poret (depending on the filter) and I may even have a 2" thick piece of 30PPI Poret in one of the filters before finishing with a large bag of either EhfiSubstrat/Pro or Pond Matrix.

I run the 20, the 30, and the 45 ppi.
I was a little surprised to find that the 30 ppi seems to be the one that clogs the most. I suppose my fish make medium sized particles. the 20 does get dirty, but hasn't ever significantly slowed the flow. the 30 catches the most and has reduced the flow by quite a bit. the 45 doesn't get bad running after the other two.
I have 3" of the 30, 2" of the 45 (stacked) and a 4" block of the 20 and I smack them clean every 3 months, the clogging happens after 4-5 months with no prefilter.

Gill would you consider the 45 to be similar to a fine foam pad and place ontop of the bio media and the 20 or 30 coarse and placed below bio media
