IMO, they are better. Ottos don't get violent like SAE and after awhile SAE stop eating algae. SAEs can get up to 12 inches(I had 2 at that size). The only 2 downsides with ottos are they die easy(sensitive) and tend to be shortlived.

But in terms of the types of algae they eat, is there any difference?

Otto won't touch bba. You options are really SAE or flagfish. Can't make a great argument for purchasing either. Best bet manually getting rid of bba and figuring out the problem. When I used to get it I found it was do to poor circulation.

It's because of my high no3 in the tank, I got it down today and removed hair algae with a toothbrush.

Worked really well.

What's the best way to introduce ottos to a new tank after long shipping time?
