Definitely gator gar. Easy way to tell is how broad the snout looks and the darker appearance

True alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) Very nice looking fish, I love the dark color on that monster!

You can tell its an alligator gar because of the thicker snout, body shape, and the pattern. It is not rare to see these guys with the dark coloring, although it is my favorite (besides the gold variants and "snow" variants that are extremely rare and can run around $10,000). They normally grow darker as they get older and grow larger. For most other gar species, if this were there color I would assume they are pretty stressed, besides trops which have a very wide variety of patterns and colors.
