Filtration arrangement.Messy or Neat?

Should bio media for a OHF be place neatly as seen in this picture or should it be just thrown in without any arrangement for more surface area to maximise effectiveness.

Well a ohf you are more likely to see than a conventional sump so I would take some care to make it look good. I mean you dont need to line up ceramic rings, but id attempt to make it look better than my regular sumps which are hidden

however you can achieve maximum flow with maximum media.

it doesn't look like the filter above could handle that media in any better configuration than it is in the pic.

Yeap that is true I mean if it is more effective for bacteria growth in a messy media I would choose the effectiveness over the looks!
