Hey everyone! Hopefully this is the right section to post this in. Recently me and my boyfriend bought an injured florida gar from uncle bills. He was in a tank that was way too tiny for him. We could tell his mouth was a little beat up when we first got him but didn't realize exactly how bad until we got home. His poor mouth is literally split almost in the middle (its more off to the side) all the way down to almost where his mouth starts on his head!! We named him woody because of it since it literally looks like a split log. I have no clue how it could of possibly got this bad at the petstore unless he swam right into the tank sides at full force or something. I feel so bad for him
We are trying to nurse him back to health. He however is not eating feeders and I think this is because it hurts to hold them in his mouth. Is there any kind of frozen food I could try feeding to him that wouldn't hurt his mouth as much until it starts to heal up? Will it ever heal up? I was thinking about going out and buying some stress coat that has aloe vera in it to try and help the wound heal faster. I used it on my bichir and ropefish when they got their fins all completely chewed off from a tank mate (who is now gone) and it helped them heal and grow back! Took almost 2 months but it worked. Is there any other medicine anyone would recommend? We also have a red tail catfish in the tank with the gar so any medicine that wont affect catfish would be nice! Please help!!

As regards the food, you may try frozen bloodworms. They usually eat them pronto (specially young FLG) and he won´t hurt himself (more) eating the worms.
You may also doze some kind of stress coat to the water to help the healing process but most of all keep the water pristine by increasing your water change regime in the next weeks.
And keep an eye on the RTC so the gar doesn´t become a snack. How big is he and how big is the tank?

Thank you for your advice! Tried some bloodworms last night and he just was not having it. I put some stress coat plus in that has aloe vera to help healing. I also talked to a local specialist fish store who deal with gars a lot. They told me to buy StressGuard. Says its suppose to help heal wounds and prevent infections that may come from it. Never tried it before so I will pick some of that up today after work! I will keep you updated about his progress. Right now him, the red tail catfish, and the clown knife are all in a 75 gallon to grow them out. The red tail is only about 5 inches right now. The gar is at least 6 or 7 inches. Once we get the 1,000 gallon tank we are building up and running, and they are too big for this tank, we will be moving them to the 1,000 gallon :)

Hey everyone just wanted to give an update! I have been treating woody with something called stress guard. Its to help fight off bacterial infections that could come from being wounded as well as aiding in healing up the wound. Well I'm glad to say it has definitely helped!!! Woody's mouth has healed up so well that the split in it has started healing over (no longer can really tell that it was split in two pieces) and the shattered ends of his top and bottom jaw are healing over too! :) I was giving him the medicine daily as well as hand feeding him for a while. He was swimming slow before but hes getting faster and stronger everyday! He can now catch the minnows on his own! He does still eat bloodworms from my hands though :) I've attached a video here for you guys to see :) Don't mind the dirty water. I stirred up the gravel quite a bit trying to get a minnow up at the top for him.
