Sand for vivarium drainage layer

Pretty much sums it up.. Im changing my previous 90 gallon aquarium to a day gecko vivarium I took the sand out and wanted to know if I can use the sand as a drainage layer vs gravel or hydroballs? Or is the sand to fine

I'd say the sand is too fine for good drainage. You can also use pea gravel. The sell big cheap bags of it at Lowe's and Home Depot.

I have used sand as a drainage layer for vivariums without a water feature. If you keep it really wet i do not think it would work but for a somewhat dry tank, it works great.
