Yeah Shortnose Gars are pretty thin for gars and though they have the potential to reach 3 feet but it's a lot more common for them to max out at 24 inches especially in captivity. Sorry that you might've got a raw deal. Here's a couple of pics of Shortys including mine around 12-14 inches.

At 3ft in length now it may still be fine in your tank for awhile as your tank looks huge. What are the dimensions?

Its 8,2ftX6,6ftX5,9ft do i got some room to play with but it was never my intention to end up with a gator gar. It has always been on of the spices on my no never ever list.

In My Aquarium
I have a 28 inch gator gar and I am having problems with keeping it with tank Mates I have some of the same fish as you do,and he is pretty aggressive.I hope he does not start going after your fish.I had to change out a lot of them because they like to go on a shredding spree every time I add a new fish he shreds it or eats it.I hope you get lucky and Got a mellow one
