Can I use a canister filter to use as filtration and as a algae grower?

My thinking is that if I install a waterproof light source and install in a canister filter (2217) it can grow algae inside that instead of the tank.

I've seen it done in sumps...

Could it work?

Or are there better solutions that won't effect the interior of the tank..

Like a DIY algae scrubber? Could work...but would the algae not jam the impeller or get sucked thru and then back into the tank?

Didn't think about that..

I'm open to any suggestions, I really hate algae, and I'd like to do what it takes to reduce it.

I have 20-25 ottos, some amine shrimp, and 3 bristle nose Plecos.

I'm considering adding some SAE for a while, but I don't really want them.

So anything I can do?

Also have uv light 24/7

And 8 hours of light, I only get BBA...
