I think I finally figured out what the tank size ratings on HOB filters mean.

I always disregarded the gallon recommendations on filters, especially HOB filters, I normally equate them as being half as effective. I have a 75g cichlid tank with a fluval 104, 406, aqueon 75, and just threw away my broken ac110. (Thats like 400 gallons of filtration per mfg recommendations)

After jamming 2 aqueon quiet flow 10's on a 29g (seeding filters for a 20h to house some fish for a friend in coming weeks) it occured to me that maybe they correspond to the rim size of the tank and length of the lift tube more so than filtration ability?

It would also explain why my aqueon quietflow 75 is shimmed to fit the back of my 40b and the lift tube is near the gravel.

Just never thought about it before. Good info for putting multiple small filters on a large tank or over filtering a small tank.
