Got a used tank with gravel from my friend a whole ago. Also got another used tank from a different friend which I'm now setting up and in the process of putting the gravel form the other tank in this I realized it looks like large coral sand. If so what pH does it raise water to?

It depends, new coral would generally raise the ph but looking at the state its nearly impossible to say how much it will raise. Old coral is less effective at raising ph but knowing that coral is a buffer is simple to say it will raise the ph.

Ok. My tap water pH is 7.6 if that helps any.

The tank is a growout for some juvi yellow perch so anything up to 8.0 should be fine but I'd prefer to keep it similar to tap water. I'll test pH now and tomorrow.

Don't know how fast it would raise pH but here's what I'm measuring. It's API and not expired.

Looks like 7.5-7.6 now to me.

Oh and when asked how old it is I'm not exactly sure but it's from a friends tank who sat unused in their attic for a while so I'm guessing it's pretty old.

Take a spoon-full of it out of the tank and into a bowl. Add some vinegar. If it fizzes, then it has calcium carbonate and will buffer your water.

Matt
Didnt fizz but I also put some gravel and a bit of water in then added the vinegar so I don't know if that affects it. Shouldn't I imagine.
