Current setup:
-170G freshwater tank
-40G sump, half filled
- 300W eheim heater in sump
-Quiet one Sub pump (rated 1400gph), uses 115 Watts 24/7
- tank in garage, usually in the mid 60F. Therefore, not too concerned with my water overheating since I live in SF.

New setup
- replacing current pump with a Jebao 6000 DC sub pump that has nearly equal GPH but uses only 40Watts.

Question:
Since the Quiet One pump is not so energy efficient, heating my water in addition to my heater, would replacing it for a much more energy efficient pump that doesn't heat my water as much cause my heater to just turn on more frequently? In the end, does my energy bill equal out? Many thanks!

I have the DC 12000 and a 250W heater in a 553 gallon and my water stays at 79 F. I don't think the heater is keeping it there because it doesn't stay on all the time. So the pump must be putting off a good amount of heat. there would be a difference with the smaller 6000 but I wouldn't think it would be much. this tank is in my house and it stays around 74 night and day.

Adam the DC pump can't put out very much heat. It only burns about 100W.

So I ended up replacing my Quiet One pump with a Jebao 9000 (70W.)

To get the same output flow as my Quiet One (nonadjustable, full strength at 115W) I only needed to run the Jebao at 1/2 strength, so approx 35-37W.

Though the weather has been warmer this past month, requiring my 300W heater to be on less often, my PGE bill decreased from $90 to $49!
My water temp is always from 79-80F.

I'm a happy home owner!

You can do things like insulating your sump wit foam board and getting the round foam things to insulate your pipes. That's what I did in my garage tanks in the past. I also live in the bay area. Helps keep temp stable and heater doesn't have to always come on.

I put styrofoam insulation on the bottom, and 3 sides of all my heated tanks in winter, and keep another panel of styrofoam at the ready for the front, just in case the power goes out.
