My kiddo was hunting bugs when we discovered a blue heron out back. Jokingly I told her to sneak up on it and catch it. Being 5 she tried. And got scary close too. Wish I got the last shot of her about 3' from it and it was easily as tall as her.

Surprised it stuck around for her to get that close. When we do get them here they are quick to take off and fly away if you get within twenty feet of them.

Thats the thing was I told her it was fine assuming it would just take off when she got anywhere near it. She just kept going and I got a bit nervous since it was as tall as her and didnt seem to be very afraid. I think this one has a nest just around the corner which has drawn lots of attention (are they rare?)

Not sure if they are rare or not,I live in the city but I see them from time to time around the creek in the park that is near my house.

Ive seen plenty but never seen a nest. They have a nest right down the road and ive seen some pretty professional looking photographers out there a few times. Im talking those cameras with the lenses like 3 feet long.

Sounds like some serious bird watchers,do they nest high up in the trees?

Maybe 10 feet off the ground. The nest is in a tree overhanging a lagoon which may be convenient for food but slightly perilous because I wouldnt imagine a baby bird lasting long in these alligator infested waters.

Heres 2 pics taken this summer by someone of the nest and probably the same bird (yes their camera might be a bit better than my phone)
