Simple lesson. Always have a manual heater on your glass when using a heater for your tank. What your heater says may or may not be accurate.

better yet, do i what i do and use a Ranco temperature switch. It has a thermometer probe that you put into the water and wired to an outlet. You plug the ranco in, then plug the heater into the outlet. Set the heater to 2 degree above what you want the temp to be. Set the Ranco to the temp you want. The probe reads the temp of the tank and when it reaches the temp, the Ranco kills power to the heater. When temp drops below desired temp, Ranco turns the power back on and allows heater to function again. This serves several purposes. When Aquarium heaters die, they tend to die in the "on" position. This will fry your fish. When the Ranco dies, it typically dies in the "off" position. Fish can take cooler a lot better than warmer. As well, the Ranco will have a typical lifespan of about 10+ yrs. Your average aquarium heater these days will usually last about 2. (older ones a lot longer, they just don't make them like they used to). The Ranco is a commercial until you can buy and costs about $32 already wired. $20-25 if you wanna wire it yourself. Set up this way, if your heater fails. Ranco controls temp. If your ranco fails, and fails in the on position, tank only goes 2 degree above desired levels. It takes both failing in the "on" position to do any real damage. Not a likely scenario.
