The females of all species don't get a hump. Usually.

Do most females grow to the same sizes or are they like most cichlids where the female is a couple inches smaller? Also, are they duller in color than the males like most cichlids?

My females are about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of males of the same age. Also, the females are pretty much as colorful as the males. Very few of my large male Viejas have nuchal humps although it can be quite variable from fish to fish. Here are a few pics to illustrate size difference and color between males and females. Also, check the males for nuchal humps (or lack thereof). The males do have a steeper forehead profile, with the female's head being more pointed.

I've found very few vieja get the hump. Out of the species I've kept, only briedhori have gotten the nuchal hump & with vieja the nuchal tends to be minor - not flowerhornish in the least - its only the rare fish that gets the pronounced nuchal. It doesn't seem to follow any real species guidelines either - I've seen fene, syns, zonatus & briedhori all with humps, but much more without.

Males are more impressive fish IMO, colors are the same as females, but the overall bulk & profile like Jim said make them more desireable. You've been on the fence for a while now looking at vieja, I think its time to pull the trigger. My favorites are briedhori, bifa & synspilum. If youre looking for a vieja pair, I recommend briedhori b/c its easy to tell m/f as females tend to get the black patch in their dorsal like many Centrals.
