Since Dr. John Lundberg revised the genus in 2009, only one true Brachyplatystoma filamentosum has hit the market, and it sold instantly, for $1400.

You can expect to pay about $300 for a false piraiba, Brachyplatystoma capapretum.

Who was it that brought in the filamentosum?

Thought so and I'm guessing a member snapped it up?

Not really. Since people in amazon/Brazil hunt them for food. And we as hobbyist are looking for them in the 6"-30"? size. But that's just my thought :D. What do you guys think?

same applies to goliath tiger fish , arapaima , alligator gars etc
I think maybe its because juveniles maybe hard to different by untrained eyes from juveniles of other closely related catfish

The main reason Piraibas are rare in the hobby is because Brazil, their primary place, doesn't allow them to be (legally) exported. They are also exquisitely difficult to differentiate from juvenile B. capapretum, which is in itself a rare fish.
