I have quite a few Filstars. Oldest one close to 9yrs, runs as well as it did on day 1. The xp-l may be a closer comparison to the 406, the xpxl FAR superior in performance and quality. They are my choice for what I call medium sized tanks of say 90-150gals.

Rena XP-XL is my preference. Stronger flow and in my experience, less mechanical failure. I have a Fluval 406 and already replaced the impeller, impeller cover as the gasket started to fail. Whereas with Rena zero issues. Bought these 2 filters at the same time a year and a half ago.

Also, Rena is also cheaper than Fluval.

A Fluval with pump on top is as dependable as they come. A 20 year old one is normal.
