LFS had this labelled as "catfish" and nothing more. Looked very interesting. Does anyone know what it is or have any info? Pics are bad but it was moving around like crazy and now hiddenuploadfromtaptalk1410910476285.jpg

Looks like a Madtom catfish. Is it relatively small 3-4" or less? I'm 99.9% that's what it is. If so they don't get big and have a painful dorsal/pectoral spine if it sticks you by accident. Very cool little catfish. They are in a lot of creeks and streams in SE Tennessee where I live. Quite a few different species of them as well. All stay pretty small. They like cooler temperatures for the most part and clean water with some current. They like rocks and driftwood to hide under. Make sure you provide some hiding spots. Almost totally nocturnal as well. Any kind of meaty foods will be eaten by them. Without looking it up, it may be a Tadpole Madtom catfish. Just a guess.I will check on that id for you.

It is probably pushing 4 inches. I like the fact it looks like if a catfish and a loach got together...definitely an interesting look.

Thanks

I see (or at least it looks like in the picture) that the adipose is connected to the caudal fin meaning a definite madtom. Looks like Noturus gyrinus but I need better pics to confirm.

I think you'd be right. N.gyrinus is the one I keep coming back to. Tadpole Madtom. It's head looks like it's really laterally compressed and the whiskers look odd to me. Just an individual I guess. I like it a lot. The head and whiskers especially on this individual. Very cool find for a LFS.
