Can I use one if these in my planted tank? I'm using dry ferts, got a CO2 tank hooked up as well.

Yeah I'll be fine. Uv doesn't harm the beneficial bacteria or plant life.

But it will stop algae growth.

A uv sterilizer will only get rid of free floating algae (green water). It will not get rid of other types of algae. Don't really see a reason for using one in a planted tank.

Its not 100% needed but it is nice to have for the fish's sake. However, a good unit will be a few hundred dollars, and I do suggest using a good unit so that you can get not clarification but actual sterilization, which helps a lot with fish diseases (and can kill ICK if you ever get unlucky and accidentally introduce it into a healthy tank).
