I was at petco last night buying my dog a new leash. However I went to browse the fish section for any thing new or any fish donations someone may have brought in like any person would naturally do lol.i saw they had fired the old fish specialist who actually knew a thing or two about fish and they brought in an ill educated new guy. All the tanks were rescaped and all tanks had horrible algae covered decor and most tanks had ich and dead fish scattered along the bottom. Anyway to get to the story there was a family there saying ohhhh and ahhhh to any fish who caught their attention and pointing to the "cool ones" and then they proceed to the koi tank. They seemed to want them the most. Anyway they called the new fish "specialist" over so they could make a purchase. Turns out this dude didn't know crap. They told him they had a big tank. At this point I chimed in. (someone to have a tank big enough for koi would certainly have a tank in the thousands or hundreds of gallons) I asked what size tank is it. They didn't know but showed me with their hands how long the tank was. Turns out it was about the leingth and height that a 20 gallon long would be. (Facepalm moment) the specialist seemed to not have an issue and let them buy 3 of the 6 inch koi for their 20 long the koi were on sale (probably because the tank was packed or something I'm not too sure). They told him they didn't have a filter, he said filters weren't needed until the waste started collecting and the water started getting a little cloudy. (Another facepalm moment) so now that they have the koi I think it's over but no, they proceed to the tank with dwarf gourami on sale for $2 for 5 and they end up getting 4 goirami. I tried to Budd in and explain some things but they seemed to only want to listen to the specialist and questioned everything I'd told them and asked him if what I was saying was correct. He explained to them fish get to the size of the tank etc and the koi will stay and 6 inches and at this point I was mad.again not being listened to because I'm 17? (Most likely that was the case, and I do look younger than I am) But what could I do. They were convinced by him. And they already wanted the fish too badly I think. They may not be stupid fishkeepers since that was most likely the first time they ever bought a fish but they were certainly only listening to what the "specialist" had to say and wouldn't listen to me whatsoever. There is people like that all the time at my local petco, the old fish specialist would have never let those fish leave that store.
