I have a 40g tank with dimensions 36"x13"x21", and I wanted to know if could put some type of africans I can put in their? And if so how much?

Do you have a lake preference? Malawi you could do a group of dwarf mbuna or there's plenty of options if you go for the smaller Tangs or Vics. I wouldn't recommend haps or peacocks, they'll get too large unless you decide to do a single species being group.

Even though you said you weren't interested in breeding I suggest Pseudo. Saulosi, I love the stark contrast in colors from males to females. I had 15 in a 40 breeder.

You could do either. Keep in mind that it's best to keep mbuna in a 1:3 ratio of males to females...so you could do one species 3m:9f or 3 species with 1m:3f. Your other option is to do just males but be careful in your selection because males that look similar will fight more since they're similar looking. Along the same idea if you do multiple species make sure the females don't look similar.

Here's an example of what I think would look nice...3 different species with the 1m:3f ratio

Iodotropheus sprengerae aka Rusty
Cynotilapia afra (Cobue) now known as Cynotilapia zebroides
