what size tank?

and non tempered is always the better choice, even though 99.9% of commercially made tanks are tempered glass, it has a history of being unstable for no reason.

really you are going to have to know what size you are building, determine the dimensions and then from there you can figure out a thickness of glass and how you are going to brace the walls from bowing out once filled.

I was under the impression that only the bottom pane was tempered in commercial tanks?

I thought so too, but I have a few petsmart bought tanks and the stickers they hide on the braces say "made with tempered glass". You could be right and they could only mean the bottom pane.
