Recently bought a kilo of seachem safe and was wondering if it should be added directly to the tank in powder form or mixed in a small 5 gallon bucket first. What do you guys do. What has worked for you.

I've added it directly to the tank in the past with no problems. Now I mix it in my water storage tank before doing a water change. Works either way.

Mix with water first, it doesn't have to be in a bucket. I mix mine in a Tupperware container then add directly to tank prior to refilling with fresh water.

Ok and also I see online that there are lots of mixed things said about the dosage. Some say 1/4 tsp per 50 gallons and some say 1/2 tsp per 50 gallons and the bottle says 1tsp per 200 gallons??

From the seachem website:

May be added to aquarium directly, but better if added to new water first. If adding directly to aquarium, base dose on aquarium volume. For exceptionally high chloramine concentrations, a double dose may be used safely. To detoxify nitrite and nitrate in an emergency, up to 4 times normal dose may be used. If temperature is > 30 °C (86 °F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, use a half dose.

Also:

Safe™ is the dry version of Prime® and shares all of it’s advantages; however, Safe™ is even more concentrated than Prime®.

Directions
NOTE. These directions supersede all other prior packaging.

Directions for 10 g and 50 g

Use 100 mg Safe (scoop) per each 100 L (25 gallons) as needed to reduce chlorine and chloramine or per 25 L (6 gallons) for ammonia.

Directions for all other sizes

Use 1.25 g (1/4 tsp.) for every 1,250 L (300 gallons) as needed to reduce chlorine and chloramine or use 1.25 g (1/4 tsp.) for every 300 L (75 gallons) for ammonia

I use a 1/4 tsp per gallon and add the total volume of the tank directly (in powder form) to the tank when I start my refill.
