earlier today I test my water 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 40 nitrate. I do a water change and I test it again in a few hours... 40 nitrates, 2.0 ppm nitrite and 0.5 ppm ammonia! What the hell is going on?

First question, Is your test kit expired?
Second, how well do you clean your test vials?
Have you tested your tap water?
what treatment do you use in the tap water when doing water change??

Some treatments will cause false reads for up to 24 hours after a water change.

What else has recently changed? new fish? less fish? power outage?

1. No, it expires in 2019
2. I forgot to clean them, cleaned them out with tap water and cleaned it out with a cloth to make sure there's no water left
3. Yes, my tap water is 1.0 PPM ammonia and 0 nitrate and nitrite
4. I use seachem prime.
