Picked up 30 feeder guppies that I am planning on breeding to make more feeders. I noticed this morning not even 24 hours after putting them in a 20 gallon by themselves that the bottom of the tank was covered in crap. Do guppies normally produce this much waste?

Their new fish, stressed, they will poop. Give it a week and it will be back to normal but guppies do produce a fair amount of waste if constantly fed

Yeah you need good filtration with those things along with a power head to keep the poo suspended off of the bare bottom so the filter can remove it from the water column. Cyprinidae et al tends to be a messy group of fish.
