Oak Leaves to Lower pH

Went out in my yard tonight and gathered a huge ziplock bag full of oak leaves. I've heard theta they're identical to Indian almond leaves in that they lower the pH of the water. I figured I'd ab them now before winter comes and I can't find many. However I don't need to use them yet and won't need them until my Fishroom is setup in late dec-early jan. I have a few questions about them though.

*How quickly and how low will they lower the pH to?

*Should I do anything to preserve them until I need them? (Right now they're stuffed tightly in a ziplock bag with all the air I could squeeze out of it gone)

*Do they need replaced so often in a tank and do they deteriorate quickly?

thanks guys!

Can't tell you exactly about PH, but to preserve them just keep them dry, that is all. As for lasting in an Aquarium; I have found that oak leaves become too soft fairly soon and that could potentionally make a mess in your tank. Beech leaves have the same effect PH-wise and do not decompose in a tank :)

I don't think they deteriorate quickly at all. There are oak leaves under my pier at my lake house from last fall.
